Independent accessibility monitoring

How accessible is your council’s website?

Perceivable checks every UK council website against WCAG 2.2, every night, and will publish the results openly, so problems are spotted early and progress is visible.

  • 379 council websites, covering all 382 UK councils
  • Up to 7 pages checked on each, from the homepage to everyday services
  • Every night automated checks against WCAG 2.2 level AA

Results are coming soon. We’re running checks every night and will publish results once we’ve made sure they’re stable and fair.

How it works

  1. The same pages, everywhere

We check each council’s homepage, its accessibility statement and five everyday services, such as paying a parking fine, so results can be compared fairly.

  2. Tested in a real browser

Every page is loaded in a real browser and tested with axe-core, the open source engine many accessibility specialists use.

  3. Published in the open

We’ll publish results for every page, with what each issue means, how to fix it and what has changed since the last check.

What our results mean

Automated tests are a powerful early warning, but they only find some accessibility problems. We’re clear about the difference.

What we do

  • Find problems that definitely exist, such as low colour contrast or unlabelled buttons
  • Spot when a website gets better or worse
  • Show every finding, so anyone can check it

What we don’t claim

  • That a website is “accessible” or “compliant”
  • To replace a manual audit or testing with disabled people
  • To judge pages we couldn’t check: those never count against a council

Run a council website?

Our crawler, PerceivableBot, visits a handful of public pages each night, one at a time, and follows robots.txt. Find out how it works and how to verify it, or email hello@perceivable.co.uk.
